Thinking of Extending or Renovating Your Home?
Extending or renovating your home can be exciting, but knowing where to start isn’t always straightforward.
You may already know exactly what you want — perhaps a larger kitchen, a loft conversion, an extra bedroom or a complete refurbishment. Or you may simply know that your home no longer works as well as it could and want to understand what might be possible.
At Studio AVC, we believe you shouldn’t need to commit to a full architectural service before you understand your options. That’s why there are several ways to start working with us, depending on where you are in your project.
1. Initial Consultation
A good place to start if you’re still exploring ideas
If you’re considering extending, renovating or reconfiguring your home but aren’t sure what the best solution might be, an initial consultation can help give you some direction.
We can discuss your home, what isn’t currently working, what you would like to achieve, your priorities and your approximate budget.
This is also an opportunity to talk through questions such as:
- Could we extend rather than move?
- Is a loft conversion worth considering?
- Can we improve the existing layout without adding a large extension?
- What might be possible within our budget?
- Are there likely to be planning constraints?
- What should we do first?
Sometimes a relatively small design intervention can completely change how a home feels and functions. The aim of the initial consultation is to identify the opportunities before you commit to a particular solution.
2. Feasibility & Planning
For homeowners ready to understand what is realistically possible
If you have a clearer idea of what you would like to achieve, the next step can be a feasibility and planning study.
At this stage, we look more closely at the existing property, your brief, the site and relevant planning considerations. We can explore different design options and help establish the most appropriate approach before developing a planning application.
Depending on the project, this might include a rear or side extension, loft conversion, internal reconfiguration, refurbishment or a combination of these.
The feasibility stage is particularly valuable because it allows important decisions to be made early. Rather than simply adding as much space as possible, we consider how new and existing spaces can work together, how natural light enters the home, how rooms connect with the garden and how the design can improve everyday life.
Once a preferred approach has been established, we can develop the design and prepare the information required for planning.
3. Full Design Service
From the first ideas through to construction
For clients who would like support throughout the project, Studio AVC provides a full design service from feasibility and planning through technical design, tendering and construction.
This allows us to maintain the original design thinking as the project develops and to coordinate the many decisions that arise along the way.
Our work can include architectural design, interior design, bespoke joinery, material and finish selection, lighting considerations and coordination with structural engineers, contractors and other consultants.
For us, architecture and interiors are not separate conversations. The way an extension looks from the garden matters, but so does where you make your morning coffee, where the family gathers, where storage goes and how daylight changes throughout the day.
A successful renovation should feel considered as a whole.
Which Route Is Right for You?
You don’t necessarily need to know.
Some clients come to us with drawings, Pinterest boards and a very detailed brief. Others start with little more than: “We love our home, but it just isn’t working for us anymore.”
Both are perfectly good starting points.
The important thing is to understand the potential of your property before making major decisions about design, planning or construction.
