SW House: Edwardian Home Refurbishment and Modern House Extension in South West London

SW House is a house renovation and extension by Studio AVC in South West London. The project transforms an Edwardian terrace into a bright, modern family home. It keeps its original character while adding more space, light, and comfort.

Extending and Modernising an Edwardian Home

The design includes a rear extension, a loft conversion, and a full interior renovation. The aim was to create extra space and a better layout while keeping costs low.

Moreover, the ground floor was reconfigured to open up the plan. Walls were removed so light can flow freely from the entrance to the garden. As a result, the home now feels wider, brighter, and more welcoming.

In addition, improved circulation allows the family to move easily between rooms. The transformation turns a traditional layout into a modern, open-plan space that suits contemporary living.

Light-Filled Living Spaces with Garden Views

The rear extension adds valuable floor area and natural light. Full-height glazed folding doors open to the garden, linking the house to the outdoors. Meanwhile, a large skylight above the living space brings sunlight deep inside.

Furthermore, the new flat gravel roof is durable, simple, and easy to maintain. Therefore, the extension performs efficiently while keeping a clean, elegant look. It also complements the existing structure, blending the old and new seamlessly.

Simple Interiors Designed for Everyday Life

Inside, the palette mixes stone, timber, and dark zinc, creating warmth and calm. The interior design focuses on comfort and functionality. Sliding pocket doors allow flexible use of space, opening rooms when needed and closing them for privacy.

In addition, the bathrooms were redesigned to use every inch effectively. For example, a new ground-floor toilet improves accessibility. Moreover, all service areas run along the side walls, leaving the centre of the house open and free of clutter.

Consequently, the interiors feel spacious, bright, and practical — ideal for family life.

Loft Conversion with Light and Space

The loft conversion adds a peaceful master suite with an en-suite bathroom. Large sliding windows open onto French balconies, offering garden views. Meanwhile, a generous skylight fills the bedroom with daylight throughout the day.

The bathroom includes a walk-in shower and a freestanding curved bath beneath the sloped ceiling. In addition, built-in storage under the eaves keeps the space neat and uncluttered. As a result, the top floor feels both luxurious and efficient.

Sustainable Materials and Long-Lasting Finishes

The dark zinc cladding on the extension and loft provides a strong, weather-resistant finish. It is sustainable, low-maintenance, and fully recyclable. Moreover, full-height glass doors enhance ventilation and let in abundant natural light.

At the front, the rendered brick façade was carefully restored and repainted. New window frames now match the modern rear design, creating a unified look across the whole house. Consequently, the property feels complete, cohesive, and timeless.

A Modern London House with Edwardian Character

SW House shows how Studio AVC combines sustainability, comfort, and heritage. The design respects the past yet meets modern needs for light, energy, and flexibility.

Ultimately, the home blends openness with privacy, creating a calm retreat in the city. Thanks to its simple details, sustainable choices, and thoughtful planning, SW House stands as a model for modern living in an Edwardian context.
